There has been a lot in the press recently about how many portions of fruit and vegetables we really should be eating. The latest data shows just over 30% of adults are eating their 5 a day and amongst teenagers it’s only about 10%, in other words we could do better.

If there is one step you take towards making your diet healthier, make it fruit and veg as it’s a big step! Fruit and vegetables are the powerhouses of the diet, containing a wide variety of vitamins, minerals, fibre and phytonutrients which help to combat the onset of diseases like coronary heart disease and cancers and optimise health.

There is ongoing debate in many scientific circles, as well as mainstream media, over how to avoid problems of food security associated with growing crops for biofuels instead of food.

David Tilman, University of Minnesota Regents Professor and McKnight Presidential Chair in Ecology, has highlighted that expanding the production of food-based biofuels, such as maize, inevitably will either take away land from food crops or require new land.

One of the major challenges associated with an ageing global population is the increasing incidence of age-associated cognitive decline, which has significant implications for an individual's ability to lead a productive and fulfilling life.

In stark economic terms the cost of ageing reflects decreased productivity and engagement with the workforce. The maintenance of brain health underpinning undamaged cognition is a key factor to maintaining a positive, engaged, and productive lifestyle.

In light of this, the role of diet, including supplementation with nutritional and even pharmacological interventions capable of positively affecting the neurocognitive changes that occur with age constitute vital areas of research.

Cereals: Importance and Composition

Cereals are grasses and members of the monocotyledon, or monocot, family – one of two major groups of angiosperms (flowering plants) that are traditionally recognised, the other being dicotyledons, or dicots.

They are cultivated for the edible components of their grain (botanically, a type of fruit called a caryopsis), composed of the endosperm, germ, and bran. Cereal grains are grown in greater quantities and arguably provide more food energy worldwide than any other type of crop; they are therefore vital staple produce. The chemical composition of the cereals varies widely and depends on the environmental conditions, soil, variety and fertiliser.
